Action Bronson & Riff Raff "Bird on A Wire" (SIMON REX!)

It has been a while since I have posted any music / videos, simply because you are all probably keeping up with this stuff as quickly/quicker than I am. HOWEVER. This is just too too good not to post.

Okay so first thing's first, RiFF RaFF SODMG. If you are not already familiar, please slide on down the rabbit hole that is his youtube presence. This guy first graced our boobtubes as a contestant on "From Gs To Gents," and has since gone on to launch a semi successful online rap career (*side eye*). But let's talk about his tattoos. He has the NBA logo, World Star Hip Hop logo, MTV logo, BET logo, Bart Simpson, and more... tattooed on his body. He also wears a pumpkin/jack-o-lantern chain.

As far as his raps go... he's not great. He doesn't really have a great sense of rhythm, and he definitely gets his funnies in, but it does all seem kind of gimmicky all together. AND YET I still really really love him, because I think that his whole persona / look / raps / career / tattoos / image are a very well thought out and brilliantly executed joke – RiFF RaFF gets the last laugh!

Action Bronson on the other hand is a great rapper. His voice sounds a lot like Ghostface, he has great videos (see "Shiraz" and "Brunch"), sweet beats ("Shiraz" over "The Shadow of Your Smile" on organ is jazzy fabulous), and he's just a good ole New York kid from Queens.

This is a sweet song, and a sweet vid. Action looks like a walrus with two XL Js hanging out of his bearded mouth, RiFF RaFF's hair is on point, "Tailor me a leather suit on some Jodeci shit" is obviously A+, Alchemist makes an appearance OH YEAH AND THERE IS SIMON REX AKA DIRT NASTY, SO. Dirt Nasty released a record through Myspace Music (o_O) in 2007, and according to his wiki page, "is credited as the impetus behind Mickey Avalon's personal rediscovery of, and subsequent success in, hip hop," which is one the least awesome claims to fame I have ever heard of.

Pretty much the only thing I did this month of January other than work and watch The Bachelor with Cara was take Instagrams of my shoes. Which as an exercise actually ended up being sort of useful 'cause it made me wear a lot of oldies that have been sitting in disuse. Also now that my toe is healed I can move on to some girl-type shoes I guess.

But while I was home for the holidays I dug through some of my parents pictures (and threw away a ton of summer camp pics of people I don't remember, sorry guys), so I should have some fresh material for the MSTN series pretty soon. Nike iD Custom Sneakers: Wanna Help?

Ante is really the best. As you may remember from my Christmas list, one of the things I have been jonesing for is a pair of custom, TooManyRonis Nike iD sneakers. December was a great month, though it flew by way too quickly. I had such an amazing time back in Portland with my friends and family, and got some much needed R&R.

Every year for the past 6 years my girlfriends from high school get together for a progressive dinner. We do 4-5 "courses"/stops along the route, usually walking from one apartment/house/parent's house to the next. I hosted the main course this year (my second time hosting) and made a spicy seafood cioppino with halibut, . My mom helped set a beautiful table and we had a ball yammering and catching up and gossiping. I love those girls so much and feel so lucky to have such an awesome tradition to look forward to year after year.

Resolutions for 2012

Happy 2012 Y'all! I hope you had a happy healthy New Year celebration and are working on your resolutions, if you're into that sort of thing. I have many resolutions this year, but I'm also trying to be realistic about what I ~~can~~ will commit to. Here are a few of mine so far...

Cook more. This one is pretty straight forward, but there are things I want to get in the habit of cooking, like fish, crockpot meals, big batches of soup, and other budget-friendly foods.
Never pass up the photobooth. I love photobooth pictures but almost never take them because they're kind of expensive. But this year I'm going to just go for it – memories are priceless!
Drink less during the week. I love beer and love trying new/seasonal brews (yet another side effect of coming up in Portland), but I definitely need to scale back on the weeknight "1 or 2 beers with dinner" routine – I know my wallet and my liver will be happy about this one.
Read 7 books from the Modern Library Top 100 List. 'Cause why not? I've read about 20/100 so far, but reading all 100 by EOL would be pretty sweet.
See more Cara. Cara is my very beautiful smart best friend in Brooklyn. She has a blog that you must read if you don't already. We both have crazy schedules, but I'm resolving to see more of this lady in 2012, starting with the renewal of our Monday night Bachelor dates (TONIGHT!).
Go to dance classes. Specifically Chio's class at BDC. Anyone wanna be my date? I know you do! Teamwork makes the dream work!
Beef up the ol' savings account. 'Cause I'm 26 now... so.

And last but not least (and obviously if you read this post), BLOG MORE. I have tried to rekindle my passion for journaling but it just isn't happening, and this is is the next best thing.

What are your 2012 resolutions? Did you keep your resolutions from 2011? My only resolution last year was "Make my bed every day." Kept the bar prettayyyy low with that one, and I did pretty well! (But I'm not perfect okay?!)

Last night I spent the evening catching up with my friend India, and after talking about blogging and other creative projects for much of our conversation, I felt compelled to try to switch things up and kick my ass into gear. I like blogging, but the way I have been blogging recently isn't meeting muster as far as serving my impulses and representing who (I think) I am. I think I really tried to hard to make this a fashion-centric place, which isn't why I started it back in 2009 (whoa). So I made this:

After reading this post blog I recently discovered called Sometimes Sweet, I realized that I should just try more. I haven't been putting enough effort into this. I really like writing, and I used to journal/write a lot; it's time to try again.

I've been trying to be really good about shopping lately. I got nice presents for the people I love in life for Christmas, and it felt really good to have money to spend on them. I have been watching the sales / deals, and have made sure to get free shipping on all my online purchases, plus huge discounts on some nice stuff too. Smart shopping has its rewards!

BUT, I bought these Topshop boots a month or two back, after searching for the perfect mid-heel pair for a long time. Topshop shoes can be hit or miss but these puppies look pretty expensive in person, are HELLA comfortable and make most of my clothes seem fancier than they are – all thanks to that little stacked heel! I've been wearing them non-stop. Definitely my best purchase of the year. (Also this lady wearing my holy grail Isabel Marant sneakers complimented me on them, so).

I got these sunglass for $Free.99 at an event and they are the perrrrfect shape. I found the Zara scarf in the mens department and I love the colors in the plaid. The Tom Binns earrings were my birthday gift to myself. I had been eyeing them for a long time and had some freelance money put aside, so I finally said, "TREATYOSELF!"

I love how hungover I look in this pic. It's like I just got up still wearing my clothes from last night's party and I'm ready for some day rage / hair of the dog, or something. In reality I was just a baby so that definitely is not what happened in that picture.

This outfit is what I want to wear to Christmas / birthday celebration this year. Most fashion right now is SNOOZEtastic in my book, but I'm obviously still not over Stella and I'd kill for any of the jackets/coats from Alexander Wang's fall collection. I think this would be a pretty fuckin fresh look to roll into a holiday party with.

Growing Older, Celebratin' Christmas

WOOP it's holiday time! My Bday is on the 21st (which is also the winter solstice and will be the last day of the world next year, according to the mayans), so this month has historically been epic in my life. Here are a few of the things on my list this year. There isn't really anything I'm dying to have, other than those way-too-expensive but most-incredible-of-all-time glasses, but it's nice to get jewelry since it's not traditionally something I buy for myself. I'm loving all the rad bracelets from Miansai. And I'm digging those Marant rips, they are nice and basic.

I hate my Bberry and want and iPhone but the service is more $, so. Anything Pendleton is rad in my book. Okay, TOO MANY RONIS Nikes? Why didn't I think of this before? SO GOOD. I also really really really want those Concord Jordan 11s, but they are coming out on the 23rd and since I'll be traveling that day it's not lookin' like I'll be in line to nab some. PS3Move seems like a party waiting to happen, and for some reason that I can't quite explain I am OBSESSED with these new Kid Robot tchochkes.

The Working Girl Esq, my girl Preetma, recently did a post musing on the possibilities of the sweater + pants + flats combo, and it dawned on me that that's pretty much what I wear every day, but without any exciting variety. (Really, at all). I did however, just buy my first pair of printed jeans which was pretty exciting... so there may be hope for my wardrobe yet. I went window-shopping and put together these combos that I wish I had and would wear the spit out of, hopefully they will inspire some real-world outfits with what's already in my closet!

A Post in the Style of Move Slightly: Giles Nails

I got my nails done (acrylics and the whole nine) a few weeks ago, and after a few weeks got very indecisive about whether or not to get a fill and do some crazy nail art, or wait until they had grown out enough to take off without completely destroying my nails. So I punted (to use the ole football lingo), filed them flat as best I could and then went to Ricky's and picked up polishes that I though would look good together – and I'm totally thrilled with how they came out.

Thus, I have put together a post in the style of Elizabeth Monson, the undisputed queen of runway-inspired nail art (which she shares on her beautiful and inspiring blog, Move Slightly). Miu Miu, Christopher Kane, Versus, she's done them all flawlessly – so check them out!

My own fluke attempt at nail art reminded me instantly of the Giles Spring 2012 collection, full of shiny silvers and reds, lacy filigree, and glamour. Thanks Elizabeth for being such a badass and inspiring this post!

Apparently, as a tiny baker, I had the weight of the world on my shoulders – that is a seriously morose face. It's a Circus Circus

In the past I've done a lot of silly little photoshop cut outs, collages, etc, for my favorite runway collections, but I kind of dropped the ball this time – that, and I just wasn't zany for a lot of the Spring collections. One that I particularly loved though, was Dries Van Noten.

One of the themes that appeared in the collection was Vegas – more specifically, the Circus Circus casino. There was a subtle print featuring the sparkling, distant lights of the Vegas strip, which appeared very lady-like and almost dainty. And then there was the glittering Circus Circus marquee, stretched boldly across some particularly wonderful pieces. What I loved about this collection was that it was not serious, but was still beautiful and even earnest in a way that made it feel fresh and (yes, that dreaded word:) chic.

Maybe I am a bit predisposed to love the collection though. I went to Vegas for the first time this year and completely fell in love with the whole scene. You can smoke inside, you can wear ANYTHING you want, and hot babes bring you free drinks! The Circus Circus casino really embodies that whole spirit and then some, with maybe a dash more glamour than you'll find at Caesar's or Harrah's nowadays... LET'S ALL GO IN 2012.

My Style, Then and Now: Nancy Drew

This picture was taken sitting on my grandma's front porch, after she did my hair. I LOVED getting my hair done in hot rollers, so as you can see I'm doing some very earnest posing in honor of this 'do. I was also super into Nancy Drew books at this time. I loved her alt girlfriends George and Bess, I always felt like George was such a badass.

The most bewildering thing about this post are those kickass floral Dr. Martens I'm wearing... I do not remember them. But they look pretty cool! I would also wear the "Now" outfit all the time. I love those plaid loafers sooo much. Truth be told, I probably will not do too much shopping this fall (esp after picking up those new sneakers, oooops). If anything though, I could use some more dress shirts and a nice cozy sweater like this one.

Let's Talk About Shyne.

I've been stewing over this post for a long time. I became curious about "Whatever happened to Shyne?" a few weeks ago, but when I found out what did happen, it almost seemed like too many believable facts and events to contain within one blog post. Shyne's story reads like the script to an underdog "Best Picture" nominee starring Michael K Williams – so I'll just give you the Cliff's Notes.

Shyne, who you probably remember from songs like "Bad Boyz" and "Bonnie and Shyne" (above), was born in Belize and moved to Brooklyn with mom his when he was 13. His father, the Prime Minister of Belize, had strained relationships with his son, and publicly stated that he was unwanted. Shyne found a new family on the streets of Flatbush and was discovered rapping in a barbershop by producer Clark Kent (whose first hit was Junior Mafia's "Player's Anthem") who thought he sounded like Biggie. Fast forward a year, and Shyne is part of the Puff Daddy's Bad Boy crew with a record deal under his belt.

But, his new alliances proved to be his downfall. A few days after Christmas in 1999 Shyne went to a club with Diddy and J. Lo, and a gunfight broke out. The details of exactly went down that night are shady, but Shyne was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement, including shooting a woman in the face, and Diddy was acquitted. Shyne's self-titled release came out in 2000, and makes references to his sentence on tracks like "Whatcha Gonna Do": "Whatcha gonna do when the shit hit the fan / Take it like a man, or snitch like a bitch." He earned a lot of credibility for not fingering anyone else in the shooting, and the whole incident shed a huge amount of media attention on his first release.

While he was in prison, Shyne found Judaism and changed his name to Moshe Levi Ben-David. He was released in 2009, but after only a few hours was immediately taken into custody again on immigration charges and issues surrounding his green card. His dad petitioned Governor Patterson to pardon Shyne, hopeful that he'd be able to pull some strings (especially since the Governor had recently pardoned Slick Rick from similar charges). But after fighting to stay in the country for about a month, Shyne was deported to Belize where he stayed only briefly before moving to Jerusalem, where he has been living as an Orthodox Jew and working on his next two albums for Def Jam, both due out this fall, titled Gangland and Messiah.

In a recent interview about how Judaism has effected his life and his music, Shyne said:

I could be in Paris right now hanging out with Lady Gaga. But when kids see me in Jerusalem, that bears a message of transformation and growth. Who wants to be selling crack all day to poor people? On June 5th, Shyne premiered a new song called "Solar Energy" at the inauguration of the first solar field in Israel. He wrote the rap with the president of the Arava Power Company – and you can see the live performance here:

I for one am eager to hear what else Shyne has up his shiny, striped sleeves. He was featured on Lil Wayne's Carter IV "Outro," and still seems to have a lot of support from the rap and hip-hop community at large, despite his dramatic change in lifestyle and values – not to mention what so far has been an extreme topical shift in his music (I can't remember the last time I heard a song about alternative energy sources...). It doesn't necessarily sound like he's interested in drawing a secular crowd this time around, but either way – I'll report back!

Every Soundtrack Ever (and some memories)

In my family growing up, renting movies and going to the movies was a sport and a pastime, and always a treat. Sometimes when my mom was out of town, my dad would let us watch TWO movies in one night (omg), and to this day, my family always goes to see a movie when we're all in same the city long enough to squeeze it in. It may sound like a lazy or anti-social family activity, but we always got a lot of joy out of the whole process – from finding the newspaper and picking a movie we could all agree on (or piling in the car to go to the rental store), to talking about our favorite bits after the credits rolled, my "family movie night" memories are happy ones. 

My dad and I are both slightly musically-obsessed/fixated, and have a lot of the same taste. If we particularly liked the music in a movie, we would often go by the Music Millenium on Burnside to get the soundtrack on the way home from the theater. All the soundtracks above are ones that I own on either cassette or CD (that I can remember). Some of these were obvious hits during their time (you know you own the Garden State soundtrack, fess up), others maybe only had a few winning tracks and were otherwise largely forgettable (Free Willy, obviously). The Saint soundtrack remains one of my favorite records ever ("Six Underground" by Sneaker Pimps, anyone?), and I know for a fact that my dad still listens to the Romeo Must Die soundtrack in his car. 

One of the things that I love so much about soundtracks as they used to be, before you could pick and choose which songs you wanted to download from iTunes, is that they're essentially a grab-bag. Charlie's Angels introduced me to "Brandy" by Looking Glass. The Dr. Dolittle soundtrack has this amazing song called "Your Dress" by an RnB group called Playa that drifted into obscurity after only a few singles and an album that peaked at 86 on the Billboard charts – and I still know all the words! The Money Talks album was a little weak, but Next Friday (the only ST I own from the Friday series, bizarrely) has some major slaps.

I still buy CDs sometimes, but usually only when I'm in Portland, and I can't remember the last time I bought a soundtrack – which is too bad. I sort of miss the experience of listening to a new soundtrack all the way through and feeling excited to be surprised by a song or artist I'd never heard before.

***Note. I was 10 when Waiting to Exhale came out – I have still never seen it. But I loved "Shoop" so much and the music video where they were blowing out candles that I bought the cassette.

Girl Skateboards is putting out these navajo-inspired decks sometime soon. and I would like to buy them all and hang them in my house, if I had money, or a house. They remind me of Proenza fall and pre-fall. 

In 2003 I made a short documentary about skateboarding in Portland, and featured my cousin Peter, who at the time was about 7 or 8 years old. Now, he's a pro skater. Here he is in all his fucking awesome glory:

Tyler The Creator + Pusha-T "Trouble On My Mind" Video

The internet can be a truly beautiful place sometimes. Yes, it's also creepy and weird and has bred a world of stalker behavior (I see you) and over-sharing, but the right Wikipedia stumble or puppy-with-his-duck-friend video can turn around your whole day. This is an example of internet awesomeness.

Pusha-T formed Clipse with his brother Malice when he was just 15 years old, and together they released their first album to Elektra records when he was 20. More than a decade and four studio albums later, Pusha is now gearing up to release his first solo effort, and putting out mixtapes and working on collaborations in the meantime. Tyler, The Creator was 6 years old when Clipse's first album came out. Now 20 years old and with two records under his belt, Tyler has been on the cover of Billboard, NME, Wonderland and more – but fame hasn't changed his fan-boy love of Clipse.

A few months ago, Pusha-T and Tyler struck up a "convo" on twitter. Here's a look at some of those tweets:

 For all his horror-core lyrics and cocky-teen swagger, this is just d-gamn cute. And the result of all the above tweets is this song/video, which is one of my favorite favorite videos I've seen in a very long time. It's fun to imagine how hyped Tyler must have been throughout this whole experience, and Pusha really gets to let loose in his tube socks, too (without sacrificing his ever-present need to roll around in a sick whip (which I am not mad at, btw)). The song is solid, if not overwhelmingly slappable, but I think it was smart of them both to stick to what they're good at: even, driving, smart and witty rhymes.

I can't remember what the arm patches were but I think they had something to do with the NBA... and then I lost it. I lost jackets about once a month for the better part of a year, and then I got over it.

This is a picture from horse camp. I begged and begged and begged my parents to let me go and then one year I got to go. I used to also collect horse figurines and sketch horses using a "How to Draw Horses" book that was really helpful. *cough*

This outfit is sort of hood, but it's honestly probably one of the most realistic outfits from the "Now" series that I've posted to date. I'm obsessed with those amazing shades, that hat, those booties, the Supreme jacket... sigh. I'd wear this every day. Forever.

I haven't really fallen head over heels over a pair of sneakers in a long time. But when I heard that Liberty London was doing another Nike collaboration, my interest was definitely piqued. The pair that I scored at an Opening Ceremony sample sale in Feb '10 remain some of my most treasured sneaks.

Butttt these "Tom's Jets" dunks are just so beyond ridiculously wonderful and splendid and fabulous. My heart is singing out for them. Here are some other standouts from the collection:

Obviously, these are all really wonderful too. The blazer lows on the far left are kind of perfectly subtle and give off a nice peachy color. They'd all look so great with white jeans this summer, or an awesome light/dark denim canadian tuxedo (just trust me on that last one).

I've been listening to these two mixtapes all day, alternating. The old guard and the new guard.

Pusha-T (of the Clipse, for those who aren't familiar) is branching out on his own with great results (picture me giving double thumbs up while I say that). But seriously, the mixtape is as good as I hoped it would be, the highlight being "Open Your Eyes" produced by Nottz, which samples Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in a not-eye-rollingly-obvious way. I'll admit I'm predisposed to being way too into this, but I'm way too into this.

Then there's Nostalgia, Ultra by Frank Ocean of the Odd Future crew. Chances are you've heard some buzz about the OFWGKTA boys (and hopefully you caught their incredible performance on Jimmy Fallon), but this mixtape is more Drake than Tyler the Creator. It's a pretty soulful R&B/hip-hop fuse, sampling from an eclectic array of songs while still feeling mighty fresh and new. Good for non-rap fans and heads alike. Also for fear of sounding like a stan, he has a really really really nice voice (NYTimes compared him to Terrence Trent D'Arby, which made me laugh a single laugh).

Something kind of sweet: Frank Ocean put the mixtape up for download on his tumblr, and included rich text files of the lyrics to all his songs in the zip file. Aww.

Bottom line: download these both, now.

So as you may know, my mom is in town for a visit, and boy have we been having a ball. Today we went on a historic pub crawl downtown and had a deeelicious dinner at Pleine Sud (where our fab friend BJ is the sous chef).

Yesterday we spent a good chunk of time at the Chelsea antiques garage, which I wish I had taken pictures of. That place is really, really super awesome. I think I had the impression that even though it's basically a flea market, there wouldn't be anything I could afford, but there is a ton of beautiful, special vintage jewelry for really reasonable prices (I'll post my new ring this week!), lots of great art/old photos, clothes, odds and ends, and more more more. I could have spent a boatload in there – needless to say I'll be going back. Also I saw Birdie Bell trolling the aisles, which I felt like was a pretty good endorsement.

THIS is my new Club Monaco coat (gift from mom!). I saw it months ago in the window of the store and had a heavy sigh moment knowing it would never be mine... so when we found it at the back of the sales racks for over 50% off and the last one in my size, it had to be fate. I absolutely love it. Whaddya think?

I did a DIY! I don't do too many DIY projects, usually because they either wind up costing a bunch to make or come out looking too "crafty," but when I saw this braided hex nut project on Honestly...WTF I was like OKAY that I could do. Their version is a little more lady like, but I went for some heavier hex nuts – I like the weight of them. I made one bracelet with black, one with neon yellowishgreen, and a necklace with staggered groupings of nuts with a mix of neon orange and yellowishgreen cord. I wanted to make a million more but eventually I ran out of nuts (awwww nuts).

I wore these with my crazy pink scarf from Ecuador out to a friend's birthday party, and got lots of compliments, I can't wait to make more and try out some new materials/styles. I got a few requests for special projects, now I just need the hardware store to open so I can get crackin' on these bitches!

Sorry for the blogging hiatus, Fashion Week was a mad, fun whirlwind. I'm really into the all white looks that cropped up on the runways for spring, and would absolutely love to rock an outfit like this, with huge shoes, neon accessories and a super soft white tee.

At the wedding I was in, I was instructed to hand out flowers to only the pews marked with a pink bow.... but I got really confused and started handing them out to all the pews, and then I was like "Shit I fucked up!" So I went back and took back the flowers from the people in the undeserving non-bow rows. Once I figured it out I think it went okay. I proceeded to wear those lace trimmed bloomers to school, under all my dresses/skirts, for a solid year. Loved those bloomers.

Also this is not the only time I'll be doing a "Then and Now" post for this picture, obvi gotta do my wedding 'fitter.

So here are a few snaps from fashion week. I'll hopefully get some show snaps / thoughts together but for now I'm just happy to have a bit of a break. It was a hectic but also awesome week, saw some awesome shows and saw lots of people I love love love. Also during fashion week, I learned that I need to invest in some good outerwear for next winter. I realized I'm king of lacking in that area – my leather jacket was NOT cutting it in the warmth department, but my other coat is reallllly tired.

Ahhh fashion week. It's upon us again. Starting Thursday it's going to be hectic hectic hectic. I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about fashion week, but let me boil it down to this. It's hard to dress for fashion week. Not just because you're on your feet all day and the weather is pretty much always "weird" at best, but also because people take your picture, or they don't. But it's awesome and flattering when they do, even though the pictures usually wind up nowhere. Last fashion week I got my picture taken for a website called OnlyLady.com. So... that was something that happened.

But, it's a super fun time to get a little wild with your outfits, because there is always someone dressed up a little crazier than you are, and ultimately unless you're Kate, Taylor, Joanna or one of THE BLOGGERATTI no one cares what you're wearing or who you are. The picture above was taken by my friend and awesome photographer Rachel aka The Greyest Ghost. This was one of my favorite outfits from last fashion week, mostly 'cause I was comfy and didn't feel like I was "all dressed up." Also any opportunity to wear my Assad Mounser bullet necklace is a great day. And I love jumpsuits.

Hooray! My trial frames from Warby Parker arrived today and I'm pretty excited. Unfortunately the lenses are just glass for now and have a major glare against the macbook camera, so all these pictures are kind of wonky. You should definitely check out the site if you haven't already – a complete pair of glasses is just $95, which is pretty much the cheapest you can get without going unlegit. Also, they donate a pair of frames for every pair purchased, which is swate.

So I went to a very small elementary school for K through third grade, and it was seriously aces. We had only one long hallway, and every year we made a school quilt for Women's History Month, and had a "Jelly Bean Field Day" where you basically got a bunch of jelly beans for doing amazingly fun things outside (seriously!). Also, in gym class we learned square dancing and had an annual square dancing performance and of course, I had to look the part. My brother clearly was dressing for a "John Waters' 80s" costume party at his kindergarten class... or something.

Okay so also – even though I'm not wearing glasses in the "then" picture, I threw these Oliver Peoples in there because I broke my frames at Igloo Fest in Montreal this weekend. It was p craycray. I want some new frames like these, just not for the OP price (but darn are they pretty). I am also over the moon for the new Proenza accessories... and the shoes and shirt and all of it.

"Oh hey guys, here I am just checking out the sights to see in good ole Santa Fe." I freakin loved Santa Fe. This was the first time I ever flew on a plane and I totally killed it! I'm in deep hearts with Proenza pre-fall 2011. To Grandmother's House We Go: Part 2

As promised, here are some more pictures from my grandma's house. She has bar none the most amazing bathroom of all time. It's covered in mirrored wallpaper, has a giant vanity mirror, and the hand towels are kept in a ceramic lion. I adore it.

It's become a tradition for the cousins to sneak away during Christmas eve every year to try on all her incredible jewelry and get a spritz of perfume. These pictures don't even cover a half of what she has, it's pretty awesome. Here are some highlights, I hope you enjoy.

To Grandmother's House We Go: Part 1

My grandmother's house is pretty magical. She has a giant sewing room full of yards and yards of mudcloth, batik, plaid, and hundreds nay THOUSANDS of buttons.When I was a kid, I used to spend hours upon hours sorting bags of buttons from garage and estate sales. It was very important business and I loved doing it. My grandma used to make me the most exquisite coats, one years was a red wool number with black trim at the sleeves and a matching red beret – I got street snapped wearing it! I was about 6 I think. I definitely owe my love of fashion in large part to her. Also my love of Shirley Temple movies, Rex Harrison and Ovaltine.

Anywhoo I hope you enjoy this peek into her sewing room, and hopefully I can dig up some photos of her creations to show you too. She also collects pottery in different colors – white, yellow, green, etc which I've included here, and part two will include her unbelievably glam jewelz, bathroom and closet. Stay tuned!

Ahhh the holidays. It kind of blows my mind how fake this picture looks... but this moment really happened. This is at Christmas at my grandparents house, and that is my Aunt Kakie on the left and Aunt Alicia on the right. I'm not sure why I'm so "dressed down," although I do seem to recall that there were a few years when I didn't get that into dressing up on Christmas (here's hoping I can find a photo of the time I wore my Palladium boots with an Earth Day t-shirt over a thermal). I'm obsessed with this disco-in-the-city fantasy outfit, btw, even if it isn't winter appropriate.

This was kind of Portland-y weather today and I was kind of loving it. This weekend I made a bunch of Christmas cookies with the buds, ate a bunch of them, watched TWO Harry Potter movies since the boyf needed to catch up, and now we're in the processes of slow cooking some pulled pork for tacos tonight. Woo woo! Also these are some of my favorite wedges that I own 'cause they're kind of Proenza-y. To my right in all these photos is where they bottle the Manhattan Special, which is a coffee-flavored soda that I have never tried but sounds really nasty.

I started tumbling too, and DANG but it's addicting. Now I'm going to spend the rest of the day creating fantasy wishlists from a million stores online and reading Real Simple.

Required Listening: N.W.A.

This is a very rough history of N.W.A. told with vids and images.

First, Dr Dre was in a group called World Class Wreckin' Cru, recording super sessual 1980s Electro-hop R&B jammers like "Turn off the Lights:"

At that time, he looked like this:

Then Eazy E swooped in on Dre and Ice Cube who were buddies and both performing at a club called Eve's After Dark on a regular basis, and N.W.A. was formed (other members included DJ Yella, Arabian Prince and MC Ren).

It all started with this...

"Straight Outta Compton" recorded by N.W.A. in 1990. Then, Eazy E gave $2,500 to the Republican Party and had lunch with George H. W. Bush. – but that's just an aside. He was a cutthroat businessman who saw hip hop as the best new way to make a buck, and make a buck he did, despite rapidly losing his cred because of his shady business tactics and inflammatory statements to press.

Then Ice Cube said, Eff this I'm out (he wrote about half the lyrics on platinum-selling "Straight Outta Compton" and got well under $100k of the $650 it grossed), and recorded the incredibly awesome/harsh diss track, "No Vaseline."

Next up Dre ditched N.W.A. for Suge Knight and Death Row after similar issues with Eazy E, and recorded this:

"Dre Day." Oh hey Snoop! This song is another epic Eazy diss but also PLEASE WATCH the video at minute 3:38 and look closely at the 9 year old white girl dancing in the background. Umm.

Eazy came back at Dre with "Real Muthaphuckkin Gs" (censored version: "Real Compton City Gs"):

You can't really be mad at Eazy for using pics of Dre from his WCWC days in this video...

N.W.A. was dissolved completely. Eazy then signed a Jewish rap duo called Blood of Abraham, and started doing a whole lotta good with the money he'd made, taking kids from Compton on trips to Disney Land, sponsoring community events and giving kids money for college. Outside of the public eye, he became a local hero.

These are pretty sweet. Pink, black and silver Air Max 90s that I bought on eBay. I think maybe the only thing I've ever bought on eBay. I placed the winning bid via my Blackberry during a smoke break when I was working at a dive bar called The Deck on the Columbia River one summer. It was a sweet gig. They are a bit snug but they still look fairly new-ish, so I try and take good care of them.

Curls and Some Music

Okay first of all... I finally learned to curl my hair.

This was a major triumph for me. I went to an event at Folica last night where some awesome stylists from White Plains taught us how do holiday hair – for real. We learned a "fancy bun" (the only one I've truly mastered), a Jessica Alba updo and a Taylor Swift updo. I also learned that all curls have different names. The above curls are Victoria's Secret curls slash Sarah Jessica Parker curls (cause they're really messy underneath). You should check out their blog, HairJunky, it has lots of practical advice if, like me, you suck at doing hair.

OH HEY! Behold, the incredibly beautiful Leora Kadisha, StyledOn's wonderful founder and CEO, in Sally Singer's debut issue of T Magazine. Wearing Proenza, of course. I've really enjoyed what I've read of the issue so far, from the arts/books features, to the REALLY REALLY good Zing! editorial styled by David Vandewal. But seeing Leora on those glossy pages was definitely the highlight.

On another note, this little getup from YSL seems to be an editor favorite this season (at left in Dec. Elle, at right in T) ... and while I am headoverheels in love with Alba's juicy stack of bangles, Nicki's attitude is killing it. #Win.

Wore this on a windy Saturday to fuel up at Sel de Mer before mainlining more Nip/Tuck (ppl say season 5 sucks, but I'm really into this Portia de Rossi / Bradley Cooper / Tia Carrera hot mess. Bring on the dram). I have had this skirt since high school and just recently had it tailored to fit better, but I think I've had it so long that I've lost all perspective on whether or not it's actually a cool skirt. Does this happen to you? I'm so used to seeing it my closet that I'm like, "Oh, you again. Do I even like you?" Is it really not cute and I just don't know it? ISSUES.

Today, I think I'm going to re-lace some of my sneakers to fresh-en them up a bit, put together a much needed music post for the Roni, and do my christmas/birthday wishlist post (btw my birthday is December 21, I'm a solstice baby). Tory Burch Resort, Roni Style

I'll be honest. I haven't always been a big Tory Burch fan. Her ubiquitous logo flats just didn't do it for me, but as I've grown more familiar with her collections, and as her designs have started veering away from the logos, the more I've fallen in love with her clothes. Her resort collection is full of really awesome patterns, different textures and COLOR – my favorite.

Guys, lets talk about this picture. I'm surrounded by boys dressed in pirate costumes, as this was clearly a pirate-themed birthday party, and I'm honoring the theme only vaguely with this outfit. Also, I'm standing with a stick in my hand, presumably to hit the rainbow pinata above me, while looking wistfully into the distance at god only knows what. The kids behind me are like "WTF are you doing!?!?" Haterz.

What I Wore On Thanksgiving

Since it was Thanksgiving and I knew I would be doing a lot of cooking followed by a lot of eating, I picked this really comfy dress to wear and jazzed it up with some of my favorite gold jewelry. Oh and this red feathered hair clip that you can't really see in these pictures. We had 10 friends over for an early dinner, and it was a big success. We had all the turkey day favorites and an incredible spread of desserts. The whole day really did make me thankful for my incredible friends, they're simply the best.

Today, we recovered with a Nip/Tuck marathon (omg Brittany Snow the neo-nazi is too much to handle and WHEN is poor Kimber going to be reunited with Christian?), leftovers, and PJs. Four day weekends should be a once a month thing if you ask me.

And though I have outgrown the matching leggings + sweatshirt combo (or have I?) I would wear something very similar today, as I really do love a good matchymatch (so not cool, I know). These are all pieces I've been silently obsessed with for a while that I think would kick ass put together. Is it too much? Tell me the truth I can take it.

Ahh yes. The turquoise scrunch-front booties, a staple in every fashionista's wardrobe, am I right? I bought these at a tiny boutique in Portland because they were on sale and I felt compelled. I think I've only worn them once circa 2005 to go play pool with a friend and then to the Pita Pit near Powell's afterward. I didn't get a pita but while I was standing outside waiting for my buds, this nice-but-creepy guy told me that he wanted to paint me, at his studio above the Pita Pit. Thanks but no thanks.

Here is what I wore to our holiday photo shoot today on the Upper East Side. It was really fun, got to hang with my awesome StyledOn buds and met some new friends, The Little Black List and Ramshackle Glam. It was basically a gigglefest. The shoot was shot by the wonderful Rachel of The Greyest Ghost, and I can't wait for you to see it!

All the Shoes I Own #13: Vans Flower High Tops

I was heavy into Vans for a while, but who wasn't (am I right??), and these are really fun, sweet high tops. I usually don't go for the made-for-the-girls versions of sneakers, but I like the flower power of these. Also, I really love that I somehow found a perfectly crisp bed of leaves and straw and other rando stuff to shoot them on. Serendipity!

What I Wore to Buy Socks

This is what I wore to go buy some new Uniqlo socks, and guess what, I was WEARING Uniqlo socks!!! I got purple, blue, green, and sort-of-green. Prettayyyy hyped. All the guys stuff there right now is truly cute. The girls stuff is semi-cute. Also the guys socks are way better than the girls socks (sorray just saying).

Sorry my face looks so bummed out in these photos, I was trying to show off the wares, but DO YOU LIKE my festive holiday shoes?
